Padmaavat had a mixed response from critics. The aesthetics, photography, and Singh’s portrayal of the villainous Khilji were praised by critics, but the storyline, execution, length, and adherence to regressive patriarchal mores were panned. The portrayal of Khilji as a stereotyped bad Muslim king and Ratan Singh as a good Hindu king, which sparked religious demonstrations, was also criticized by critics. Despite not being distributed in some parts of India, it became a commercial triumph and the 10th highest-earning Indian film of all time, grossing over 585 crores at the box office. Padmaavat garnered 18 nominations and won four prizes at the 64th Filmfare Awards, including Best Actor (Critics) for Singh. It also took home three National Film Awards, including Bhansali’s Best Music Direction.

I enjoyed the movie
This is a lavish historical epic production that brings to life a renowned Indian poem. A beautiful queen, a handsome king, a terrible enemy warlord, exquisite clothing, and gorgeous landscapes make this drama feel like a fairytale set in the distant past. The couple’s love tale is beautiful, sophisticated, and courageous. The cultural traditions try to capture the essence of the previous era. There are also scenes of boisterous dancing and singing in the film. The actors do an excellent job in their parts and convey a lot of emotion to the story. Many accolades are due to the talented costume designers! The English versions are large and simple to read in English. The film is quite entertaining, and it serves as a terrific introduction to the wonderful world of “Bollywood” movies for non-Hindi speakers.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali had been developing a film adaption of Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic Padmavat (1540) for a decade. As an associate editor for Shyam Benegal’s television series Bharat Ek Khoj (1988), based on Jawaharlal Nehru’s The Discovery of India (1946), he worked on a television rendition of Padmavat, which featured Om Puri as Alauddin Khilji. In 2008, Bhansali staged an opera adaptation in Paris, which prompted him to start work on a film adaptation. Padmaavat also influences by previous adaptations of the epic, such as Bengali literary adaptations by Kshirode Prasad Vidyavinode in 1906 and Abanindranath Tagore in 1909, the Tamil film Chittoor Rani Padmini (1963) and Maharani Padmini (Hindi) (1964).
